Stoddart Transformed its Legacy Data Backup Strategy: A Seamless Shift to the Cloud
Stoddart is one of Australia’s leading stainless steel and metal fabrication manufacturers. The IT team at Stoddart was grappling with the complexity and inefficiency of on-prem LTO tape backups. It became evident that the time had come to modernise their approach and to not only streamline operations but also to enhance flexibility around data restoration.
Stoddart Transformed its Legacy Data Backup Strategy: A Seamless Shift to the Cloud
The Challenge
Stoddart was running two backup systems, Veeam and Backup Exec, but had not fully leveraged Veeam’s capabilities. Recognising the need to modernise, Stoddart transformed its legacy data, streamlining operations and enhancing flexibility around data restoration. This transition was crucial to untangle the web of outdated and cumbersome processes that had developed over time. By modernising, Stoddart simplified operations and improved restoration flexibility. The shift enabled Stoddart to overcome inefficiencies and embrace a streamlined, modern approach.
At this turning point, they engaged TIMG. Our cloud specialist, Jake Ellingham, and his team played a key role in reshaping the Stoddart approach. Through detailed consultations, we were able to establish a clear path forward, setting up a trial phase to validate the concept of transitioning to a cloud-based backup solution. This “proof of concept” not only addressed technical feasibility but also gave the team at Stoddart the confidence to present a robust, modernised backup strategy to the broader business. While there were some initial reservations about moving to the cloud, Jake and his team were transparent and proactive. They provided detailed cost forecasts and technology outcomes that alleviated concerns and secured buy-in from all stakeholders.
The result was a successful shift to a streamlined, cloud-first backup strategy, eliminating the challenges of legacy systems. TIMG was able to provide a scalable solution that ensures robust data management and seamless restoration capabilities.
The Solution
To replace the on-prem tape backups and maintain compliance for long-term data retention, TIMG leveraged Veeam’s Cloud Connect capability to implement a managed Cloud to Tape backup service, giving Stoddart a cost-effective solution for long term backup retention. In taking this approach, Stoddart removed the requirement of maintaining on-prem tape drives, supporting Stoddart’s cloud-first backup strategy and simplifying backup management for Stoddart’s IT team.
Using Veeam, incremental backups are created regularly for Stoddart’s critical infrastructure and transferred securely to TIMG’s immutable cloud storage over an encrypted connection. This provides Stoddart with a reliable restoration path in the event of a disaster or ransomware attack.
Periodic full backups get created on the cloud storage and de-duplicated to keep cloud storage costs at a minimum. On a set schedule, TIMG writes a full backup copy to tape, providing long-term backup retention in a secure, environmentally controlled tape storage vault. If a restore from tape is requested, TIMG can quickly restore data back to Stoddart’s performant cloud storage for retrieval.
Overall, this combination of Veeam’s industry leading technology, and TIMG’s expertise in tape, cloud and backup management provides Stoddart with a robust solution for their data protection needs.
